Age Restricted Items in POS: Set Up Options

There are two sets of options available that enforce a minimum age required to purchase certain items. These two sets of options allow you to set up two different item types, known as type 1 and type 2. For example, type 1 might be items that require a minimum age of 18 (e.g., cigarettes), and type 2 might be items that require a minimum age of 21 (e.g., alcohol).

You will also use two additional options for this feature. One option tells the system if the customer's birth date should be posted to the transaction as an internal (non-printing) comment or an external (printing) comment. The other option tells the system if a comment recording the fact the customer was not old enough to buy an age restricted item should post to the transaction.

Items with an Age Restriction code are considered "special SKUs" by QuickRecall. Thus, the amount of time a transaction with an age restricted item is kept in QuickRecall is determined by option 3 “Default Criteria for Purging Special SKUs."

Setting Up Minimum Age Options in Options Configuration

As described below, set up options 9412-9414 and 9416-9418 for type 1 and type 2 minimum age items, respectively. Also set up options 9419 and 9420.

1. Display the Options Configuration window.

2. Click ID. Enter the ID number of the option, and click OK. Click in the Current Value column, select the desired setting, and click Change.

• ID # 9412 "Minimum Age to purchase type 1 items"Enter the minimum age required to buy items identified as "minimum age type 1" items. When an item identified as this type of item is sold at Point-of-Sale, the clerk will be prompted for the customer's birth date. The system uses the birth date and this option to determine if they are old enough. If they are not old enough, minimum age type 1 items cannot be posted. Use options 9413 and 9414 to tell the system what items are subject to this minimum age requirement. Use options 9419 and 9420 to tell the system if the customer's birth date should be posted to the transaction and if so, whether to post it as an internal (non-printing) comment or a external (printing) comment. Note: Set this option (9412) to 0 if you are not using this feature.

• ID#  9413 "Use Code position to identify Minimum Age type 1 itemsUse this option in conjunction with the value specified in option 9414 "Code value that identifies Minimum Age type 1 items" to identify items subject to this minimum age requirement. You can select any Use Code position:
   User Codes position 1, 2, 3, or 4
   Expanded A User Codes position 1, 2, 3 or 4
   Expanded B User Codes position 1, 2, 3 or 4
   Expanded C User Codes position 1, 2, 3 or 4
   Expanded D User Codes position 1, 2, 3 or 4"

• ID# 9414 "Code value that identifies Minimum Age type 1 itemsEnter a "code value" in this field that you'll use to identify minimum age type 1 items. For example, you could enter the code "A" for alcohol in this field. In Inventory Maintenance, you'll place an "A" in a particular position of the User Code field for each type 1 item (as defined in option 9413). "

• ID# 9416 "Minimum Age to purchase type 2 itemsEnter the minimum age required to buy items identified as "minimum age type 2" items. When an item identified as this type of item is sold at Point-of-Sale, the clerk will be prompted for the customer's birth date. • ID# 9418 "Code value that identifies Minimum Age type 2 itemsEnter a "code value" in this field that you'll use to identify minimum age type 2 items. For example, you could enter the code "A" for alcohol in this field. In Inventory Maintenance, you'll place an "A" in a particular position of the User Code field for each type 2 item (as defined in option 9417). "

• ID# 9419 "Post minimum age birth date as commentThis option determines if the customer's birth date, required when purchasing either Minimum Age Type 1 or Type 2 items, posts to the transaction as an internal/non-printing comment (set to I), or as an external/printing comment (set to P)."

• ID# 9420 "Post underage comment when minimum age requirement is not metWhen the customer is not old enough to purchase a minimum age type 1 or type 2 item, this option determines if the system should post a comment indicating the customer did not meet the minimum age requirement. Set to N if you do not want this comment to post. Set to I to post this comment as an internal/non-printing comment. Set to P to post this comment as an external/printing comment."
