Do I Need Subaccounts?

The first question to ask yourself before you enter your chart of accounts into your Epicor Eagleā„¢ system is, do I need to use subaccount numbers? Subaccounts, which are sometimes called profit centers, are used to differentiate different stores, or different areas of one store, for the purpose of generating separate financial statements to determine profitability of each department or store.

A subaccount number is the last 3 digits of an account number.

For example, for the account number 1000-001, 1000 is the main account number, and 001 is the subaccount number. If 1000-001 is the cash account for store 1, the cash account for store 2 might be 1000-002, the cash account for store 3 might be 1000-003, and so on. Notice the main account number remains constant, while the subaccount number changes according to store (or department, profit center, etc.).

If you are unsure whether or not you need to set up subaccounts, you may want to consult your accountant.
