Setting Up Multiple Selling Units

This job aid describes how to set up multiple selling unit (MSU) codes. Use MSU codes for items that you sell in more than one unit of measure. For example, you sell copper tubing in three different units of measure – by the foot, a 10 foot length, and in a bundle (6 ten-foot lengths). Set up one MSU code that represents these three selling units and then link the code to all SKUs that you sell like this.

Review the "Read This" topic in online help before setting up MSUs. That topic contains important information about using Price Factors so that you do not set up a double-discount situation. That topic and others are found in the Inventory book, then open the Multiple Selling Units (MSUs) book.

1

Add a new code

  1. From the Inventory Maintenance window, click Go To and click Modify Multiple Selling Unit Codes.

  2. Click Add to display the Add dialog.

  3. At Code, accept the code that the system suggests, or type a different code (a number from 1 to 999 that hasn't already been set up as an MSU code).

  4. At Description, type a description for this code. Click OK. The Maintain dialog displays. Continue with the next section to set up the new code.

2

Set up the new code and default POS unit

  1. From the Maintain dialog, click Add to display the Add Selling Unit dialog. In this dialog you'll enter the information for the selling unit that will be the default unit at POS. For example, if you most often sell copper tubing by the 10 foot piece, enter that information first.

  2. At Selling Unit Description, type a description of the selling unit.

  3. At Quantity Factor, type the number of stocking units in a selling unit.

  4. At Price Factor, type 1.0

  5. Click OK. Continue with the next section to add more units to this code.

Add more units to the code

  1. From the Maintain dialog, click Add to again display the Add Selling Unit dialog.

  2. At Selling Unit Description, type a description for next selling unit you want to associate with this code.

  3. At Quantity Factor, type the number of stocking units in a selling unit.

  4. Do one of the following to determine the price of the selling unit:

  5. At Price Factor, type 1.0 or a multiplier number to use to calculate a different price. Type 1.0 if there is no discount or markup when buying the item in this unit of measure. Or enter a number to calculate the discount or markup. For example, enter .8 to indicate a 20% discount.

  6. In the Specific Price box, enter the price you want to charge for this selling unit. For example, if you want to charge 49.99 for the bundle (ten 10-foot lengths) of copper tubing, enter 49.99.

  1. Click OK.

  2. Repeat steps 1 through 5 in this section to add more units to this MSU code. Up to 10 units per MSU code are allowed.

  3. (Optional) After adding all units to an MSU code, you can adjust the order of the codes. The code that is most often used at POS should be first in the list. Click the code that should be first, then click Top.

  4. After adding all units to the MSU code, click OK and then click Cancel.
