Debit Bin Range Steering Overview

For cards that can be tendered as either a credit card or pin-based debit, there is a transaction dollar amount break-even point (based on your specific banking relationship) where below that point it costs less to process the transaction as a credit card, and above that point it costs less to process as a pin-based debit card. With the Debit Bin Range Steering feature, a transaction is steered to the most cost-effective tender type based on the card type and the transaction amount. You can set up Debit Steering system-wide, at a particular store, or terminal-by-terminal.

The Eagle server receives debit bin range file updates on a weekly basis, and those updates are then transferred to each POS station. These bin files determine card capabilities and steer the customer toward tendering the transaction which is most profitable to you, the merchant.

Although the system steers the customer toward using their card as a debit or credit card, the customer can nevertheless cancel the transaction flow on the pin pad and pay via the method of their choice. Selecting “Cancel” causes the pin pad to step back to the Select Transaction Type screen. From this screen the customer can select Credit, Debit, or Cancel.
