Once Debit Bin Range Steering has been enabled, option 5497 "Default PinPad device to debit mode" no longer affects the behavior of the pin pad. As a good practice, however, you should set option 5497 to N. This option represents the previous method of steering a customer toward a debit transaction, even though there was no way to check if a card was pin-based-debit-capable or not. Option 5497 simply assumed the card was pin-based-debit-capable, and would automatically display the pin pad after the card was swiped.
