Scanning Your Hard Disk for Damage

Occasionally you may experience difficulties with your PC. You can use the Microsoft® ScanDisk program to diagnose and repair problems when they occur.

To run ScanDisk

  1. Click the Start button; point to Programs, Accessories, and System Tools; and finally click ScanDisk.

  2. In the Select the drive(s) you want to check for errors list, click your hard drive (usually C:).

  3. Under Type of test, click Standard.

  4. If you want ScanDisk to automatically fix any errors it may find, select the Automatically fix errors check box. If you do not select this option, ScanDisk prompts you to specify how to correct errors.

  5. Click Start.

  6. If ScanDisk displays a window explaining an error and providing options to handle it, select an option and click OK.

  7. When scanning is finished, the results are displayed in the ScanDisk Results window. Click Close to return to the ScanDisk window.

  8. Click Close again to exit from ScanDisk.

Tip

If ScanDisk cannot fix an error, under Type of Test, click Thorough and scan the drive again. The Thorough test takes five to ten minutes longer.
