Use codes are an option you have when posting items to estimates or orders. You enter use codes in the Code box on the Posting Screen. You code items on an estimate or order according to when, how, or where they will be used.
For example: You choose to code all the foundation materials with a use code of F, plumbing materials with P, and so on.
If you enter use codes when you create an estimate, the system can automatically select all the items with any given use code when you create orders from the estimate. You can also select items by use code when copying or repricing. Selecting by use codes allows you to copy or reprice just the items with a particular code.
Use codes are user-defined. You don't have to remember what the codes mean if you set the option "Add/Change Estimate Use Codes" to Yes in the Options Configuration window. In that window, you then enter one-character codes (a letter or a number) and a description of each code. Then, when you use POS for Windows, the Use Code field will display as a drop-down list of the codes you set up in Options Configuration. The POS clerk can select a code from the list, or type in one of his or her own.
