Stand-In Credit Card Processing for Offline State Transactions

Visa made a change to the Operating Regulations which could result in unauthorized forced transactions being rejected and subject to chargebacks. All Offline POS transactions are force transactions, as are Online POS transactions when access to the processor is down.  On level  28.1, a new flow for Offline POS was created to support Stand-In processing for Offline POS transactions.  On level 29.0, this option was expanded to include transaction in Online POS in an Offline State.  The flow is controlled by Option 1872 "Enable Stand-In credit card processing". If you do not change the option, Offline and Online POS will behave as before and require an authorization code for all POS transactions.

You can configure the system so that only Offline Point of Sale (POS) supports Stand-In credit card processing or, Online and Offline POS support Stand-In processing.  With Stand-In processing enabled, if access to the processor is down, the cashier doesn't need to enter an authorization code below a specified floor limit. This allows a transaction to be automatically approved in Offline or Online POS in an Offline State and resubmitted later as a deferred authorization.

This functionality only pertains to credit card, (not debit) transactions and requires Option 1872 "Enable Stand-In credit card processing" set to O, for Offline POS only or Y, for Online and Offline POS. If you do not change the option, both Offline and Online POS will behave as before and require an authorization code for all POS transactions.

Setting the Floor Limit for Stand-In Processing

  1. From the Eagle Browser, launch the Options grid, locate option 5418 "Offline Credit Authorization floor limit", and set the value to the maximum amount you want to automatically approve in Offline without being prompted to enter an authorization code.

  2. Press F5 or Change to update the current setting.

  1. If you obtained an authorization code from your processor, click <Enter Code> and enter that authorization code. The transaction will be processed as a force transaction with a valid authorization code when uploaded.

  2. If you did not obtain an authorization code, click <OK> and the sale will be processed as a deferred authorization when uploaded.

Note: If the cashier does not have security bit 626 "Allow Offline Credit Authorization over floor limit" set, a manager override will be required to complete the transaction, just as it is in earlier versions of Offline POS.

Maximum Offline Credit Card Amount

Option 1873  “Maximum amount allowed for Offline card processing” allows you to limit the credit card amount that can be approved in an offline state. Set the value to the maximum amount allowed in an Offline state.

Any credit card transaction that is not authorized “On-Line” with the credit card processor has the risk of being declined or charged back to the merchant. This option will set a hard limit that cannot be exceeded for a single transaction in an offline state.

The following dialog displays if the Maximum Offline amount is exceeded.
